Program Overview

The mission of the Medical Professions program is to give you a broad understanding and occupational awareness of professions within the medical field. Instruction includes theory and laboratory activities in medical terminology, health and disease, medical procedures, medical professions, and other health related courses.

Job Opportunities

Upon completion of the Medical Professions program, you have the opportunity for certifications in First Aid, CPR for Health Care Professionals, and Patient Care Tech.  

Many students choose to further their education in the following fields:

  • Radiologic Technology
  • Respiratory Therapy

Degree Explanation

You have the opportunity to receive certificates and or certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Patient Care.

Many students continue their education in the Health Sciences or Nursing programs.

Program Content:

introduction to Health Science 

This course is designed to introduce you to medical professions and basic foundational skills for first aid and the treatment of patients.

Medical Terminology 

This course is designed to develop the language used for communication in the healthcare profession. 

cpr and first aid for health care providers

This course provides instruction and hands-on training in emergency response skills for healthcare professionals.  Students will complete certification requirements through the American Heart Association for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers and Heartsaver First Aid. 

Introduction to Medical Lab Technology

This course emphasizes job-related problems and experiences in the clinical laboratory, with a review of current techniques in testing, instrumentation, personnel practices, and governmental/legal aspects. 

Patient Care Technician

This course prepares students for entry-level employment as Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare settings. Instruction includes foundational nursing skills, patient hygiene and mobility assistance, vital signs, infection control, specimen collection, ECG monitoring, and phlebotomy procedures.

Enrollment Criteria

All programs in the technical center have three class periods available for enrollment. In the event there are more applicants for a section than seats available, students will be asked to choose an alternate period. If the section(s) are still over enrollment capacity, the following additional criteria will be used to determine acceptance into the program:

  1. Minimum sixth grade reading level;
  2. Minimum sixth grade math level;
  3. Minimum 2.0 GPA;
  4. Minimum 19 ACT Reading Score or 252 Accuplacer Reading Score

Final determination will be at the discretion of the instructor and the center director.
