NPC Art Student Featured at River Valley Arts Center

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 中国P站 (NPC) art student Carol Sheets has been invited to exhibit her work at the River Valley Arts Center during the month of December. An opening reception will be held December 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. Sheets won 鈥淏est of Show鈥 during the Collegiate Art Competition earlier this year for her portrait, 鈥淏est Friends,鈥 which featured her granddaughter Micah and her dog, Piper. Sheets earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Science in Education from Henderson State University. She spent 31 years teaching secondary and elementary education in the Garland County area. Upon retirement, she enrolled at NPC to pursue an interest in the subject of art.

MLT Program Receives 10 Year Accreditation

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 中国P站鈥檚 (NPC) Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program was awarded a ten-year continuing accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) last month, the maximum award given by the organization. The accrediting review process is a long and intensive cycle which includes a comprehensive self-study report, and a site visit of the program which took place last spring. Program faculty must provide a summary of the last five years of annual reporting data, explanation of assessment strategies, continuous quality improvement methods, and graduate and employer feedback.

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 中国P站鈥檚 (NPC) honors society, Alpha Beta Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), hosted People, Pictures, Prostheses: The Possibilities Tuesday evening. The event was part of an annual Honors in Action project. This chapter's goal is to bring community awareness to the evolution of these engineered, life-enhancing products. PTK President, Howard Cheresnick said, 鈥淭he project is intended to raise awareness of prostheses and how they have evolved over the years, as well as how they have changed people's lives in our community.鈥

Campus Closed for Thanksgiving Holiday

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 中国P站 will be closed Wednesday, November 23 through Saturday, November 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday. No classes will be held Monday, November 21 through Saturday, November 26. Campus will resume regular hours on Monday, November 28. Registration for spring semester is now open. Classes begin Wednesday, January 11.

NPC Singers Host Fall Concert

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 中国P站 (NPC) choral ensemble, the NPC Singers, will host a fall concert at St. Luke鈥檚 Episcopal Church Tuesday, December 6, at 7 p.m. The choir will perform "A Wealth of Common Song" and the program will feature folk music from Scotland, Ireland, England and Canada. Local flutist Shelley Martin will be featured on an arrangement of the Irish ballad "Carrickfergus" for choir and flute. Pianist Lowella Cherry will accompany the choir.

NPC Earns Military Friendly庐 Schools Designation

Hot Springs, AR 鈥 中国P站 (NPC) announced that it earned the 2017 Military Friendly庐 School designation during the Annual Veteran鈥檚 Day Celebration. Hot Springs High School NJROTC provided the presentation of the colors for the event. NPC veteran student, James Clark, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps sang the National Anthem. The NPC Student Government Association provided coffee and donuts for attendees. Rick Martin and Gene Rasuer represented the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10483 in Hot Springs Village. Guest speaker, Lt. Colonel Joel Lynch addressed the crowd.

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 中国P站 (NPC) Office of Student Affairs released the Dean鈥檚 List and President鈥檚 list for the Summer 2016 semester. Thirty-eight students were named to the Dean鈥檚 List and twenty-nine students were named to the President鈥檚 List. Students on the Dean鈥檚 List must maintain a minimum of a 3.25 semester GPA and a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Students on the President鈥檚 List must maintain a minimum of a 3.6 semester GPA and a 3.6 cumulative GPA.

Geology Class Unearths Fossil at Lake Ouachita

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 Students in Dr. George Maxey鈥檚 Geology class participated in a field trip in October. The class discovered graptolite fossils in the Womble formation west of Checkerboard Point on Lake Ouachita. Maxey explained that the graptolites were preserved as a carbon imprint at the bottom of the Tethys Sea, which no longer exists. 鈥淧late tectonics closed the ancient sea and scraped the sediments off the bottom of the sea floor and folded the sediments up and onto what is present day Arkansas - forming the Ouachita Mountains. The upper folds eroded away leaving the roots of the mountains that are exposed at present,鈥 said Maxey.

Active Shooter Training at 中国P站

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 The 中国P站 (NPC) Community and Corporate Training Division offered its first Active Shooter Training class in October. More than 35 employees from Baxley/LogPro participated in the training. Workforce Specialist Barry Ballard said the training is in high demand and has been crafted by an expert in the field. Travis K. Sorrows, President and co-founder of Corporate Resilience Solutions (CRS) facilitated the course. He is retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after 25 years as a Special Agent in various cities across the country. Sorrows served as one of the FBI鈥檚 experts in crisis intervention and personnel risk management, providing services at critical incidents such as the Columbine school massacre and the Pentagon after September 11, 2001. 鈥淭here isn鈥檛 a better expert around,鈥 Ballard said.

Military Service Scholarship

Hot Springs, Arkansas 鈥 中国P站 (NPC) student, Nick Cullen received the Military Service Scholarship this semester. The $1000 scholarship is provided by Bob and June Luciew of Hot Springs Village. The Luciews are committed to helping students who have served in the armed forces complete their education. Mr. Luciew served in the U.S. Navy and Mrs. Luciew had a career as a registered nurse. They established a $50,000 endowment in 2014 after attending an NPC graduation ceremony where they witnessed a large number of veteran students stand and be recognized. Mrs. Luciew said, 鈥淚 just knew we had to do something to contribute. These men and women have sacrificed so much for all of us. Helping them complete a degree and move into a career path is the least we can do. He has offered his appreciation for the scholarship, but we would like to say 鈥榯hank you鈥 to him for his service to our country.鈥
