The 中国P站 (NPC) Nighthawk men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball teams concluded
their seasons with losses in the NJCAA Division II Region II tournament Sunday, with
the women falling to Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech), 70-67, and the
men dropping a 92-78 decision to ASU Mid-South.
With NPC leading, 4-2, early in women鈥檚 action, SAU Tech erupted on a 14-0 run to
build a lead that would never be broken鈥攖aking advantage of cold NPC shooting and
second-chance points to take command in the first quarter. Throughout the first half,
NPC struggled from beyond the arc, failing to hit a three-pointer through the first
20 minutes. Forced to play catch-up from the paint and at the free throw line, the
Nighthawks cut the deficit to six points, 32-26, at halftime.
NPC battled back in the second half, led by 17- and 15-point halves from freshmen
Imani Honey (Hot Springs) and Nya Moody (Lake Hamilton). Late in the fourth quarter,
with SAU Tech down to just four players due to foul trouble, NPC stepped up its defensive
presence to cut the deficit to three points, 70-67, with 18.8 seconds remaining. NPC鈥檚
final shot, however, was not in time, ending a revitalizing 2019-2020 campaign for
the Nighthawk women.
Honey and Moody led the Nighthawks in scoring with 23 points apiece in the loss.
鈥淲e had an unbelievable year,鈥� head coach Marvin Moody Sr. said. 鈥淥ur women fought
hard and won a lot of games that we could have laid down on. It鈥檚 hard to beat a team
three times. In the first half, we got what we wanted, we just couldn鈥檛 hit the shots.
It was a great year, I鈥檓 proud of our girls and we鈥檙e going to hit the recruiting
trail hard. We went from four wins last year to 11 this year and we hope to have 20
next year.鈥�
In men鈥檚 action, ASU Mid-South caught fire early, beginning the game on a 7-2 run
and utilizing hot three-point 
shooting to take a double-digit lead, 19-9, with 14:18 remaining in the first half.
Playing from behind, NPC battled to stay within contention, fueled by 11-point first-half
totals from freshman Kamryn Vick (Little Rock) and sophomore Reyhan Cobb (Decatur,
GA) to make it a 13-point game, 49-36, at the half.
In the second half, NPC staged a comeback, led by 17 points from freshman Joe Ramey
(El Dorado) to cut the deficit to one possession, 63-60, with 10:27 remaining. ASU
Mid-South would regain its groove, however, taking an 11-4 run to boost the lead back
to double digits en route to a 14-point win.
Ramey led the Nighthawks in scoring with 25 points, while Vick added 20 points. Cobb
scored 18 points in the loss.
鈥淎SU Mid-South is a really good team,鈥� head coach Jason Hudnell said. 鈥淲e got into
a deficit early in the first half, but I felt like we came back and fought hard in
the second half. I鈥檓 proud of our young men, but I鈥檓 also disappointed for them. This
year, I felt like we had the talent and they deserve to be playing for a regional
championship and we will work hard throughout the off season to get us there next
year.鈥�
